The Players Championship, or The Players as it is often called, is an annual golf tournament held as part of the PGA Tour. The tournament, which was previously known as the Tournament Players Championship, was first held in 1974 and since then has developed a reputation for beings one of the most exciting tournaments in the league. This has a lot to do with the difficult course that the tournament is played on. The annual event is held in Ponte Verda Beach at the TPC at Sawgrass Stadium Course. The tournament has been at this location since 1982. The current course is known for presenting a number of unique challenges and this 7,215 yard course has a current par of par 72. In 2006 the course went under new renovations to provide new facilities for the golfers and the fans that attend big tournaments such as this and helped to make the already popular Players Championship event an even bigger event in the professional golf world. To date, it is considered to be one of the most watched and most popular tournaments on the PGA tour.Another thing that makes this tournament such an exciting event is that it has one of the higher prize funds in the PGA Tour, which is known for bringing out a great deal of competitive edge in the tournament. The Players Championship actually has the highest prize fund of any tournament in golf today. Typically the event is held in the second Sunday of May and is often held on Mother’s Day weekend. Due to the competitiveness of this tournament it is known for always having some of the most surprising results in the tournament play. While there are many tournaments who have had players who have won multiple tournaments in a row, this is not something that has happened in The Players Championship. Only a handful of players, including Davis Love III, Hal Sutton, Steve Elkington and Fred Couples have won the tournament more than once and no player has won the tournament more than twice. With a history such as this it is easy to see why the tournament is such a crowd favorite as fans will never be able to predict who will pull away with the top spot whenever the Players Championship takes place.
