Since its inception on December 27, 1971, the Fiesta Bowl has been played at Sun Devil Stadium, home arena of Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. However, the 35th staging of this post-season football classic was the last at that location, as the event relocated to the University of Phoenix Stadium, in Glendale, a new stadium built for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
To date, five Fiesta Bowl games have determined the college football's national championship, although in earlier times the designation was somewhat haphazard and often controversial. One of those championships, Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Miami Hurricanes in 1987, still holds the record for most-watched college football game ever.
When at last in 1999 there was a game officially labeled the 'national championship' by the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl played host; a record crowd of over 80,000 bought tickets to see the Tennessee volunteers prevail over the Florida State Seminoles 23-16.
The championship rotated among the Orange, Sugar, and Rose Bowls before returning to Sun Devil Stadium in 2003—that incredible game saw the Ohio State Buckeyes upset defending champ Miami in double overtime. Since 2007, the year's top team in all of NCAA Division I football has been decided in a separate BCS Championship.
Over the years, tickets to the Fiesta Bowl have given fans a chance to see collegiate players who were destined for stardom in the pros—Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen, Vinny Testaverde are but a few. Penn State's coach Joe Paterno achieved six wins there without a loss. Nebraska's Tom Osborne had to endure four losses before his Fiesta Bowl victory, but it was a sweet one: the 1996 national championship.
Major bowl games entail so much more than the four quarters on the field. The Fiesta Bowl Parade originated in 1972; with 45 balloon floats led through downtown Phoenix by some 300 Boy Scouts, it attracted a crowd of 25,000. Today fans turn out in the hundreds of thousands for the event, correctly titled the Fort McDowell Fiesta Bowl Parade presented by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation; the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship held in conjunction with the parade gives marching bands a chance to compete for the trophy that honors the finest performance in their field. More lighthearted events spun off of the Fiesta Bowl have included a charitable fund-raiser involving 75,000 rubber ducks racing part of the Salt River and a New Year's Eve celebration culminating in a 200+ lb. Tostito chip splashing into a vat of salsa!
