Charlie Wilson is an American R&B artist from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Wilson began singing at the age of three. In 1967, Charlie started a band with his brothers Ronnie and Robert Wilson, named The Gap Band. The group released fifteen studio albums before calling it quits in 2010.In 1974, Wilson and The Gap Band released their first album, Magicians Holiday. The band found its first success in 1979 with the release of The Gap Band and The Gap Band II. Both of those albums found their way into the top-10 of the US R&B charts, and both were in the Billboard 200. The Gap Band II was certified gold by the RIAA. In 1980, the group released The Gap Band III, which topped the US R&B charts and was certified platinum.In 1982, the group released Gap Band IV, which was their highest charting album, peaking at number 14 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum. 1983 saw Gap Band V: Jammin’, which was certified gold and peaked at number two on the US R&B charts. The band would go on to release eight more albums, making it all the way up to Gap Band 8 in 1986, before changing up their album titles.In 1992, Charlie Wilson released his first solo album, You Turn My Life Around, which peaked at number 42 on the R&B Album chart. Wilson then entered rehab in 1994 to deal with his drug and alcohol addictions. In 2000, he released Bridging the Gap, which peaked at number 152 on the Billboard 200. In 2005, Wilson released Charlie, Last Name Wilson, which was produced by R. Kelly and debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200, and number three on the R&B Albums chart, while being certified gold by the RIAA.In 2009, Wilson reached his greatest chart success with Uncle Charlie. The album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, and number one on the R&B Albums chart. In 2010, he released Just Charlie, which also fared very well on the charts, peaking at number 19 on the Billboard 200, and number six on the R&B Albums chart.Wilson has been nominated for six Grammy Awards. His first nomination came in 1997 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. In 2003, he was nominated for Best Rap/Song Collaboration. In 2010, he was nominated for two awards, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Album. In 2012, he was nominated for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance.
